This month the Old Mission Tours featured winery of the month is the incomparable Black Star Farms. This magnificent equestrian estate and winery is situated right in the heartland of Northern Michigan’s award-winning wine country.

The property was purchased in 1998 by founding partners, Kerm Campbell and Donald Coe, who saw an opportunity to take Sport Valley Farm’s 160-acres from an equestrian facility to a luxurious inn with its own world-class winery. They renamed the property Black Star Farms, a name inspired by a stylized star inlaid in the estate house’s marble foyer.

Today, in addition to the equestrian facility with its boarding stables, Black Star Farms boasts two winery production facilities, each with an adjacent tasting room, a distillery, a charming Inn ready to welcome guests, a tasting room on Old Mission Peninsula and host events of all kinds. Black Star Farms is a popular stop on our Traverse City Wine Tours, and is also a sought after location for parties, weddings, corporate events, and other celebrations.

In addition to enjoying wine tasting and the stunning views of the rolling countryside and the lakeshore, visitors also frequent the Hearth & Vine Cafe at the Suttons Bay site where they can enjoy the locally-inspired menu.

Another popular stop for visitors enjoying Traverse City wine tours at Black Star Farms is The Terrace, a covered patio with a spectacular view where you can relax with a flight of wine and your choice off the curated menu.

The location of Black Star Farms is ideal for growing several varieties of classic grapes thanks to the influence of the “lake effect” on the climate and growing season. The grapes grown here include Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir.

When you enjoy Traverse City wine tours, you are able to learn more about the award-winning wines produced here and about the hand-crafted approach to their craft. In addition to classic varietal wines, Black Star Farms also produces exceptional fruit brandies.

We recommend you visit the Black Star Farms Facebook page so you can enjoy all their latest news and be the first to know about their special offers.
